Senior Follows His Father’s Advice to Step Outside His Comfort Zone, Discovering Leadership, Friendship and Community

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.鈥擶hen Wade Gross, of Senoia, Ga., arrived at 麻豆破解版, he carried with him a challenge from his father. 鈥淚n high school, I was a rather reserved person,鈥 he reflected. 鈥淚 didn’t really get out and do much. But Dad鈥攐ne of the main things he told me鈥攚as whenever I came into college, I could sort of reinvent myself in a way, to where I could enjoy it a lot more than I did high school. He was exactly right.鈥

His father was also the one to suggest that he consider 麻豆破解版. Having played football against the Runnin’ Bulldogs during his own college days, he had fond memories of the University. 鈥淗e loved the campus and was really positive about it,鈥 Gross related.

Along with his father’s connection to GWU, Gross and his family often visited his grandfather, who lives in the Boiling Springs area. 鈥淭hrough high school I had an interest in 麻豆破解版 and it was always in my head as the place that I wanted to go for college,鈥 he shared. 鈥淚t wasn鈥檛 until my senior year that I finally started doing some real research on the University and applied because I really liked what I saw.鈥

Within eight hours of submitting his application, he received an email confirming his acceptance. 鈥淔rom there, I was like there鈥檚 no other option,鈥 Gross reflected. 鈥淚t really just worked out perfectly for me.鈥

One reason that 麻豆破解版 was the right fit for Gross was that he could commute to campus from his grandfather鈥檚 60-acre farm that鈥檚 just 10 minutes away. 鈥淚 enjoy having space,鈥 he offered. 鈥淚 have three trucks and need enough space for those, and I can take care of my dad鈥檚 and my papaw鈥檚 land.鈥

Despite living off campus, Gross was determined to make the most of his college experience. Taking his father’s advice to heart, he explored clubs and organizations, joined several and started building relationships campus. He participated in the Student Government Association and serves as a Student Recruitment Ambassador (SRA) for the Office of Admissions. SRAs conduct tours for prospective students and their families, answering questions about student life and academics.

Gross also became a Peer Leader for a UNIV 111 class, which is required for all first-year students to help them transition to university life, establish community, and develop practical and interpersonal skills for future success. Peer Leaders serve as teaching assistants, friends and role models for the new students.

He ventured far outside his comfort zone by participating in intramural sports and becoming involved with the men’s volleyball club, something he never would have pictured himself doing before arriving at 麻豆破解版.

The experience became another example of the personal growth he sought when he decided to follow his father鈥檚 advice and reinvent himself in college. He’s become a very different person than the first-year student who arrived on campus four years ago. 鈥淚f my freshman self could see me now, he would be shocked!鈥 he asserted. 鈥淚’ve changed so much since then. I’ve gotten more involved with the University than I ever thought I would have. I’ve built such a solid ground for myself, and I have nobody else to thank other than 麻豆破解版 and the people I’ve met here.鈥

His willingness to explore extended to the classroom as well. Gross arrived at 麻豆破解版 as an undecided student before choosing business management. As he continued to learn more about his interests and strengths, he ultimately found his academic home in communications and public relations.

“Communications is such a special major, because it’s an open major that can take you down multiple different paths whether that’s business, graphic design, marketing, sales, sports, radio, journalism, etc.,鈥 Gross explained.

He appreciates how his classes have helped him develop problem-solving skills that help him in his leadership roles across campus. His goal is to be someone his fellow students can come to when they need help. 鈥淢y leadership experience at GWU has prepared me for life after college by giving me a choice,鈥 he stated. 鈥淭hat choice is: Do you want to become a leader or follow in others’ footsteps? I want to be a leader.鈥

Whether he’s providing a tour for prospective students and their families or assisting in the UNIV 111 first-year experience class, his advice is the same. 鈥淐ollege is the time to get a good understanding of who you are and what you want to become,鈥 he said. 鈥淭hrough getting involved on campus, you can grow and find out who and what you want to become. You鈥檒l be put in certain situations and circumstances that will test you. This helps you grow and become more. So don鈥檛 be scared to get involved, be excited to unlock truths about yourself.鈥

Gross knows the value of that advice because he has experienced the transformation firsthand.

鈥淚n terms of reinventing myself, some of the things I did include making a lot of friends, getting interested in different things, being more outgoing, caring less about little things, furthering my faith and being willing to get involved with things that are out of your comfort zone.鈥

Wade Gross President Ice Bucket Challenge
Wade Gross, left, cheers as the ice water hits GWU President Nate Evans at the ALS ice bucket challenge.

He views the community at 麻豆破解版 as one of the University鈥檚 greatest strengths. 鈥淚t鈥檚 big enough that you can see new people every day, but also small enough to see your friends just walking around or hanging out,鈥 he affirmed. 鈥溌槎蛊平獍 helped me become more through the community and the opportunities that have been offered to me.鈥

For students considering 麻豆破解版 as their college home, Gross speaks from the heart. 鈥淚 tell them how special of a place 麻豆破解版 is to me,鈥 he offered. 鈥淗ow I’ve met all of my best lifelong friends here and how I can be happy moving forward in life because of what 麻豆破解版 gave me.鈥

Four years after arriving to 麻豆破解版 as a reserved high school student, Gross leaves as a leader, mentor and advocate for the community that helped shape his college experience.

Christian Studies Major Uses Scholarship Opportunities, Leadership Roles and Service Experiences to Prepare for Ministry

By Victoria Edwards, Intern for University Communications

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.鈥擜s a teenager, Ignite Scholar Jackson Hartley made one of the most important decisions of his life: following Jesus. 鈥淕od saved my life when I was in high school,鈥 noted Hartley. Since then, Hartley has devoted himself to ministry. 鈥淚 would love to be in a role where I can minister to teenagers, because I want to pay forward the work that was done in my life.鈥

A Christian studies major, Hartley is from Winston-Salem, N.C., and first heard about 麻豆破解版 from friends and family. After touring the campus, he was drawn to the close-knit and Christ-centered community. 鈥淚 immediately enjoyed the campus atmosphere, outdoors, and the emphasis on belief in God,鈥 Hartley explained. 鈥淭he campus just fit me. It fit my life, and I knew the visions I had for my college experience had begun to be fulfilled.鈥

He believes his degree is equipping him to serve in a variety of settings. 鈥淣o matter if I’m a youth pastor or a professor, if I become a chaplain in the military, or even if I explore a different field, I can use ministry in every area,鈥 Hartley noted.

Knowing 麻豆破解版 was where he felt called to continue growing in his faith and preparing for ministry, Hartley was grateful when the Ignite Scholarship opened the door for him to attend. 鈥淏eing an Ignite Scholar means that I鈥檝e been chosen for a great honor,鈥 Hartley shared. 鈥淚t makes me want to represent 麻豆破解版 well, since I鈥檝e been entrusted with such a great opportunity.鈥

The Ignite Excellence Scholarship, 麻豆破解版’s most competitive academic award, recognizes students who demonstrate exceptional academic achievement, leadership and service. Awarded to a select group of students each year, the scholarship provides full tuition for up to eight semesters, while encouraging recipients to continue growing as leaders and servants.

During his time on campus, Hartley has had the privilege to learn from many respected academic leaders. He credits Dr. Paula Qualls for her outstanding teaching methods, saying that she has been a profound influence both in his personal life and academic journey. 鈥淪he clearly has so much passion for her subject鈥nd explains Old Testament theology in such a simple way,鈥 he described.

Hartley noted how her teaching style is interactive, which enhances the learning process for students even more. 鈥淚 loved it when she brought items from Israel and Jerusalem to class鈥ecause I got to see what I鈥檝e been learning about and researching right in front of me,鈥 he said.

Hartley actively participates in multiple organizations at 麻豆破解版 and is well known for his commitment to service. He is a men’s Bible study leader with Campus Ministries United and is involved with 麻豆破解版’s FOCUS (Fellowship of Christians United in Service) ministry, which hosts faith-filled retreats for youth throughout the region. He also serves in productions and media for several on-campus events, as well as being the vice president of the Religious Studies Association.

Additionally, Hartley is a Peer Leader, mentoring first-year students, and a Student Recruitment Ambassador, working to represent 麻豆破解版 to prospective students and their families. This role gives him the ability to share his love for 麻豆破解版鈥檚 Christ-centered community. He emphasizes that 麻豆破解版 is a place for everyone: 鈥淚 believe a non-believer can come to this campus and leave with a new purpose in life, and a believer can come here and have their faith sharpened like iron.鈥

Students like Hartley are able to pursue their calling through the support of 麻豆破解版 scholarships.

By Embracing Theater, Communications and Service, Student Pursues Goals with Confidence

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.鈥擳he first time Harley Buff, of Hickory, N.C., heard about 麻豆破解版, she was immediately drawn to the school’s size and Christian mission. After meeting GWU Admissions Counselor Reilly Morgan at a college fair hosted by her high school, Buff’s interest grew, prompting her to schedule a campus visit and experience the University firsthand.

鈥淭he small campus and Christian environment were super enticing to me, and I fell in love with it as soon as I got to campus,鈥 Buff shared. 鈥淭he community at 麻豆破解版 is definitely one of my favorite aspects of the University. For me personally, it was really important to go to a smaller Christian school where I could find a community that is Christ-loving and Christ-centered.鈥

She added that the campus is a perfect size. 鈥淚t’s really hard to even walk to your class without saying, 鈥楬i,鈥 to a friend or someone that you know,鈥 Buff observed. 鈥淚t just makes the whole place feel like a home.鈥

That sense of belonging has encouraged Buff to embrace new opportunities, develop new skills and discover new passions. 鈥淭o me, the phrase 鈥楤ecome More鈥 means to explore yourself and find new interests, new hobbies, new skills and new talents from who you already are,鈥 Buff said.

Having been involved in theater since she was a child, Buff is pursuing a double major in theater arts and communications with a concentration in public relations. She arrived at 麻豆破解版 looking for ways to combine her longtime passion for the stage with professional opportunities behind the scenes. 鈥淏y doing both of those majors, I’m getting to figure out the entire world of theater, which is something that I’ve always had a passion for,鈥 she reflected.

Harley Puffs DSC
Harley Buff played multiple roles in the
麻豆破解版 production of Puffs.

Through her involvement across campus and service as a leader, Buff said she has developed confidence in ways she never expected. One of the first ways she challenged herself to step outside her comfort zone was by joining the Office of Admissions as a Student Recruitment Ambassador. The role gave her an opportunity to meet prospective students, share her 麻豆破解版 experience and build confidence as a communicator.

鈥淚 wanted to put myself out there socially, and I thought this was a great way to do that,鈥 she stated. 鈥淚 saw what a special school 麻豆破解版 is, and I wanted to be able to talk to high school juniors and seniors and encourage them to make the decision to become a Bulldog. I feel like I have grown in my confidence to talk to random strangers and to put myself out there in front of large crowds.鈥

The communication and leadership skills Buff developed while working in admissions complement what she is learning in class from dedicated faculty members who want to see their students succeed. 鈥淚 truly believe one of the best parts about 麻豆破解版 is the faculty,鈥 she asserted. 鈥淢y professors have been exceptional in teaching me both the course material as well as life skills and lessons.鈥

She especially appreciates the mentorship of Professor of Theater Arts Dr. Christopher Nelson, who also directs campus productions. 鈥淗e has always supported me in everything, including coming to a show I was a part of in my hometown, an hour away from him,鈥 Buff said. 鈥淚 really appreciate his care for us as his students and his passion to teach us more about this art we are all so passionate about.鈥

Recently, Buff gained hands-on experience in both fields through an internship with Hickory Community Theatre, the place where her love of theater first began as a child. She returned to assist with public relations efforts, prepare website content and patron mailings, work events, support box office operations and help with production-related responsibilities.

鈥溌槎蛊平獍 is good at getting you that real-world experience and doing more than just pen and paper on a test,鈥 Buff said. 鈥淭hey’re trying to get you immersed in what it’s actually going to be like to work in your field. We鈥檝e had choreographers come in and show us what it would be like for an audition. We’ve had people coming in to help us with songs or with our monologues. And the professors were interested and involved in my internship process. They were all super helpful and there for me as I started the process.鈥

Harley Buff SRA Tour Campus
As a Student Recruitment Ambassador for GWU Admissions, Harley Buff, left, leads campus tours for prospective students and their families.

In addition to working as an SRA, Buff sought other ways to become involved and serve others. One of her first stops as a new student was the Connect Fair, an event that showcases GWU clubs and organizations, as well as community groups. Buff was drawn to the information table for Delight, a national ministry for college women. 鈥淚 saw that there was an opening on the leadership team, and I had never even been to it,鈥 Buff recalled. 鈥淲hen I visited their table, I just felt like that was something I wanted to be a part of. The girls were all so amazing. They were all so welcoming, and that’s been such a great experience.鈥

She also helped to start the Backstage Bulldogs theater club. 鈥淚t’s only been around for a semester, and we’ve won many awards,鈥 Buff said. 鈥淲e won Club of the Year, which was so awesome for us. But that’s been really great to be in leadership within my major and a community that means a lot to me personally.鈥

SRA Harley Buff talks about Dover Campus Center.

She serves on the Inter-Club Council and as a Peer Leader for the Honors University Life Class. 鈥淚 feel confident in all of these roles, because I know that my leaders have trained me and prepared me for them, and I know I can always lean on them when I need it,鈥 she noted. 鈥淢y leadership roles have taught me how important it is to have a team. Having other leaders that can help and support you and those you are leading is so critical, and I鈥檝e definitely learned that over the past year.鈥

As she looks toward the future, Buff sees both of her academic disciplines playing a role in her career. 鈥淚 love the combination of theatre arts and communications,鈥 Buff shared. 鈥淚 genuinely have a love and passion for both subjects so getting to be fully immersed in them has just been so much fun.鈥

Considering all she has gained personally, academically and professionally, Buff believes the relationships she has built have been the most meaningful part of her journey. 鈥淚鈥檝e met some people that I know will be lifelong friends of mine鈥攑eople I will see at my wedding or see in the future or who will hold my future kids,鈥 Buff affirmed. 鈥淎nd it鈥檚 really special that I was able to do that just by going to college.鈥

Curiosity and Initiative Helped Mollie Fuller Secure a Full-Time Position with Metrolina Greenhouses

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.鈥擬ollie Fuller has a piece of advice for 麻豆破解版 students completing an internship. She shares two simple words that can make a lasting difference: 鈥淎sk questions.鈥

Fuller explained, 鈥淓mployers truly want to see effort and initiative from interns to see if they will be a good full-time employee. A go-getter attitude is important to show that you are willing and able to learn.鈥

Mollie Fuller headshot P

The 2026 GWU alumna speaks from experience. During her 2025 internship at Metrolina Greenhouses in Huntersville, N.C., she immersed herself in an unfamiliar industry, sought out opportunities to contribute, and made an impression on her supervisors. By the end of the internship, those efforts led to a full-time job offer.

鈥淢y manager started mentioning full-time opportunities towards the end of my internship,鈥 Fuller noted. 鈥淭hankfully, I was able to stay on part time throughout my final year at 麻豆破解版 and then transition to full time a few weeks after graduation.鈥

Fuller applied for the internship knowing very little about the horticulture industry but willing to expand her knowledge. As a retail marketing intern, she worked with a major retail account, updating product listings to ensure accuracy. 鈥淚 even helped out in the greenhouse some,鈥 she noted. 鈥淥verall, my internship was not the same thing every day, and I really enjoyed that.鈥

One of her most challenging projects was an analysis of Metrolina鈥檚 online items. Completing the tedious task helped shape future marketing strategy.

Now employed as Metrolina鈥檚 retail marketing coordinator, she is responsible for digital product content and search engine optimization, support and execution of marketing campaigns, and cross-functional collaboration. She knew about a week into her internship that she would enjoy working there full time. 鈥淭he people are extremely kind and helpful,鈥 she described. 鈥淚 have never been afraid to ask questions. It is a very welcoming environment that is truly special when looking for a great workplace.鈥

While working in horticulture is new to Fuller, she was prepared for the marketing aspects of her job by her professors in the Godbold College of Business. 鈥溌槎蛊平獍 gave me a great foundation in Microsoft Office and really helped with soft skills like communication and problem-solving skills that are useful in any career field,鈥 she reflected. 鈥溌槎蛊平獍 staff and faculty truly want every student to succeed. I loved my professors and appreciated how much they genuinely care about all students鈥 success.鈥

Mollie Fuller graduate Original

Beyond the classroom, Fuller built confidence through opportunities such as 麻豆破解版’s Career Fair, where she practiced introducing herself to employers and discussing her future goals. 鈥淚 have always been introverted, but the Career Fair helped me to become more comfortable with talking to employers and be confident in myself when looking for internships,鈥 she shared.

Curiosity also brought Fuller to 麻豆破解版. A native of Indian Trail, N.C., she received mail from GWU when she was in high school and came to check it out. 鈥淚 instantly felt welcomed and a sense of peace when I first toured the campus,鈥 she described. 鈥淚 really liked the idea of a small campus and small class sizes.鈥

Arriving at GWU, Fuller explored several options before settling on a major in marketing with a minor in economics and finance. 鈥淚 decided on marketing, because I really enjoyed my general education business classes and the professors in the College of Business,鈥 she said.

Fuller said her business professors gave her a solid foundation to build her career, and the mentorship of Micah Martin, director of the Center for Personal and Professional Development, helped her obtain her first job. 鈥淚 worked for him in the Career Center during my senior year,鈥 she noted. 鈥淒uring that time, I learned a lot about communication, hirable skills, and of course resumes.鈥

Beyond helping her prepare professionally, Fuller said 麻豆破解版 influenced how she approaches her work. 鈥溌槎蛊平獍驸檚 focus on faith helped me learn how to put faith into practice in the workplace,鈥 she reflected. 鈥淢ost people think that work and faith have to be separated, but that is not true. 麻豆破解版 taught me to lead with my faith and let success follow.鈥

She is excited about her future with Metrolina Greenhouses. 鈥淭hey have given me many opportunities to learn about the horticulture industry and see everything from production to sales to photography to shipping and so much more,鈥 Fuller shared. 鈥淚 love learning new parts of the industry and hope to continue to learn more. There is so much more to plants than one would think.鈥

For students preparing for internships of their own, her message remains simple: ask questions, seek opportunities to learn, and don’t be afraid to step outside your comfort zone.

Lydia Robinson’s Journey Includes Division I Soccer, Study Abroad in England and a Competitive Novant Health Internship While Completing Bachelor’s and MBA Degrees in Four years

Looking at Lydia Robinson’s r茅sum茅, it would be easy to assume luck played a role in her success. The 麻豆破解版 student-athlete from Charlotte, N.C., plays Division I soccer and is on track to earn both her bachelor’s degree and MBA in four years. She studied abroad at Liverpool Hope University in England, where she practiced with a semi-professional soccer program and traveled to 11 countries. She also was selected for Novant Health’s Ignite Internship Program within the Chief of Staff Department.

However, Robinson doesn鈥檛 view any of those accomplishments as luck. They are the result of a philosophy that guides her choices. 鈥淚 always say, 鈥楬ave everlasting goals,鈥欌 she shared. 鈥淭hat鈥檚 always key for me. Always have everlasting goals, because in my mind, you only have one life and you want to do it to your best ability. Take those opportunities, take those risks.鈥

Robinson鈥檚 willingness to put herself out there helped shape her 麻豆破解版 experience from the beginning. She hadn鈥檛 planned to play soccer in college, but as her high school career came to an end, she realized she wasn’t ready to leave the game behind. She had already decided to attend GWU because of the close-knit campus, but decided to take a chance and contact the women’s soccer coach. She thought to herself, 鈥淲hat’s the worst that can happen? He can say no.鈥

The gamble paid off. The coach was looking for a fourth goalkeeper. After looking into her impressive record, he invited Robinson to join the team. What began as a simple email became an opportunity to compete at the Division I level while earning her degree.

She began her 麻豆破解版 journey in Fall 2024 with plans to graduate a year early. Dual-enrollment courses and Advanced Placement classes completed in high school provided a strong start, while summer coursework allowed her to stay on track without carrying an overwhelming course load during the academic year.

Lydia robinson liverpool fc
Anfield, the home stadium of Liverpool FC,
currently has a seating capacity of 61,276.

Robinson also enrolled in 麻豆破解版’s Accelerated Master’s Program, which allows qualified students to begin earning graduate credit while completing their bachelor’s degree requirements. She is a member of the University Honors Program, a former Congressman of Honors District HAPY and a member of Delta Mu Delta, the International Business Honor Society.

Her academic path, however, wasn’t always clear. Robinson entered as a biology major on the pre-med track with plans to attend physician assistant school or medical school. While she enjoyed helping others, she soon realized direct patient care wasn鈥檛 for her.

While exploring other options, she discovered healthcare management, which allowed her to help people through leadership and decision-making. 鈥淚 was like, 鈥極h my gosh, that would be perfect because it’s the best of both worlds,鈥欌 Robinson reflected.

After choosing her major, Robinson turned her attention to fulfilling another longtime goal. For years, Robinson had envisioned studying abroad. In Spring 2026, that dream became reality when she traveled to Liverpool Hope University in England.

Before selecting a destination, Robinson researched the countries available through 麻豆破解版’s study abroad partnerships. Liverpool ultimately stood out because of its strong soccer culture, convenient location for travel throughout Europe, and connections through a teammate whose family lives there. When a different teammate learned of her plans to study abroad, she decided to join her.

lydia robinson friends

The experience exceeded her expectations. While completing coursework abroad, Robinson traveled throughout Europe, visiting countries including Scotland, Ireland, Spain, Hungary, France, Poland, and others. She learned how to navigate trains and buses, budget carefully and adapt to unfamiliar environments.

鈥淭he amount of independence and maturity I feel like I gained was game changing,鈥 she affirmed. Her mother even noticed the change and complimented her new level of confidence.

The semester abroad also gave Robinson a chance to play soccer in in a place where the sport is woven into everyday life. She joined Liverpool Hope University’s football club, and her teammate received an opportunity to play for Everton Football College. The Everton coach invited Robinson to goalkeeper practice. Training overseas exposed Robinson to a faster style of play and she learned new techniques that she plans to carry into her final collegiate season.

While there, another opportunity unexpectedly presented itself. Knowing she would be entering her senior year early, Robinson began searching for internships. One day, from her room in England, she opened LinkedIn and started submitting applications.

Within days, she received a message from Novant Health in Charlotte regarding its Ignite Internship Program. The 12-week internship rotates students through departments across the healthcare system, including communications, marketing, finance, human resources, community health and patient experience.

She participated in a virtual interview and was accepted for the program that started in June. The experience has expanded Robinson’s understanding of healthcare administration while helping her build valuable professional connections.

The internship has also reinforced lessons she learned in her business classes at 麻豆破解版. Robinson pointed specifically to professional communication skills and networking opportunities as areas where classroom experiences have translated into the workplace.

Lydia Robinson, second from left, was chosen to participate in the Novant Health Ignite Internship Program.

鈥淓very single time I’m on a new Zoom call or meet a new person, I have to redo this elevator pitch pretty much being like, ‘Hi, I’m Lydia. I go to 麻豆破解版, majoring this, I want to do this,鈥欌 she said. 鈥淪o that definitely helped me.”

Throughout her internship this summer, Robinson has carefully recorded names and professional contacts, later connecting with many of them through LinkedIn. One of the people she connected with posted about an internship opportunity for this fall, so she applied. “You never know where it could go,” she noted, expressing an interest in the program.

Whether pursuing an accelerated degree plan, studying abroad, walking onto a collegiate soccer team or gaining career experience in an internship program, Robinson believes growth begins with a willingness to try. 鈥淚鈥檝e gained so many things in life from just putting myself out there,鈥 she stated.

For Robinson, each accomplishment isn’t a finish line鈥攊t’s simply another step toward her next “everlasting goal.”

The 2020 Graduate Credits GWU’s Liberal Arts Education, Faculty Mentorship and Leadership Experiences for Helping Shape Her Career

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.鈥擮n those rare occasions when 麻豆破解版 2020 alumna Shelby Putnam catches a show at the historic Carolina Theatre in Greensboro, N.C., she takes in the beautifully-preserved auditorium and knows she is in the right place. She is reminded why she left her own business to become the theatre’s director of marketing and public relations.

鈥淭he first time I walked into the auditorium, my jaw dropped, and I couldn’t believe that there was a building like this still here,鈥 she reflected. 鈥淚 felt like there’s only one time I could say yes, to being here 鈥 and if I don’t say yes to it now, then I’ll never get this opportunity again, to just be a part of this, and be a part of this place.鈥

Opened on Halloween night in 1927 as a silent-film palace, the Carolina Theatre has evolved alongside a century of entertainment, from screenings accompanied by the Robert Morton pipe organ to today’s concerts, films and live productions. Since joining the staff, Putnam has helped promote an eclectic mix of events, including opera, ballet, comedians, concerts and community programs.

Putnam鈥檚 journey to the Carolina Theatre began years earlier with a providential discovery. A native of Rock Hill, S.C., she was looking through family records and discovered a report card showing her grandfather had attended 麻豆破解版 Junior College in 1942 and 1943.

“I immediately asked my dad, ‘Where is this? What is this? I thought granddad went to N.C. State,'” Putnam recalled. “And he was like, ‘Well, he also went to this school in the town that you named after,’ and never told me that until that moment.”

The discovery prompted her to apply, and she was accepted. When she visited the GWU campus, the connections continued to emerge. “I ran into one of the history professors who was also in seminary with my dad, and had probably two or three other small- town moments,” Putnam said. “I realized that there’s only so much that’s serendipitous, and sometimes it just is divine timing.”

While pursuing her degree in political science, Putnam immersed herself in leadership opportunities, internships and service projects. As student body president, she encountered a challenge that would steer her in a new professional direction. “When I was in student government, one of the things that we were struggling with was promotion of student events,” she explained.

Looking for solutions, she turned to 麻豆破解版’s marketing team. 鈥淭he social media manager and I sat down and had coffee probably five plus times at least, just me asking her a thousand questions and picking her brain,” Putnam shared.

Taking what she learned from those conversations, Putnam began taking photos and creating content to promote student events and engage her fellow students. “I found out that I was pretty good at it, and I really enjoyed figuring out how to connect with people,” she said. “If I can use my skills to get people to connect with this student event or with this fundraising event or this free community event where they can meet new people, then I feel like I’ve done something.”

orientation in 2019.

After graduation, she put her photography and marketing skills to work with the Boys & Girls Club in Shelby. “It was really gratifying to know that I could use technical skills to help propel an organization into this next generation and get people to connect with them in a way that maybe they hadn’t before,” she shared.

Her work went beyond marketing. “If I’m going to spend my limited amount of time on this earth doing something, then what do I want it to be for?” she reflected. “I don’t really care to get a bunch of jewels or gain a bunch of fame or money, but I do want whatever I do here and whatever I spend my time doing to have an impact.”

She credits her adaptability and problem-solving skills to her 麻豆破解版 liberal arts education. Exposed to disciplines ranging from history and acting to business, psychology and rhetoric, she developed the ability to think broadly and communicate across fields. 鈥淚f you’re looking at what type of degree will get you the most amount of skills, I would argue, it’s a liberal arts education,” she offered.

Putnam鈥檚 experience was also shaped by 麻豆破解版’s small-campus environment. She appreciated being part of a community where people knew one another beyond the classroom. She built meaningful relationships with faculty, including former Associate Professor of Political Science and International Affairs Dr. Elizabeth Amato, whom she credits with broadening her perspective on learning and career possibilities.

“She’s just an incredible mentor and person,” Putnam said. “As a professor, she inspired me to think about learning in more than one way.” Rather than limiting political science to government or politics, Amato encouraged students to examine issues through historical, sociological and economic lenses and emphasized that there was more than one career path for graduates.

As she pursued her degree and various interests, Putnam discovered that her greatest satisfaction came from connecting people with places, experiences and causes that mattered. Her passion for history and service began long before her professional career. A longtime member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, she grew up volunteering and gaining an appreciation for the individuals and institutions that strengthen ties between generations.

Those passions ultimately drew her to the Carolina Theatre in January 2026. Putnam believes theaters have long served as gathering places that bring together people of different generations and backgrounds. “There’s very few places physically that you can see an older couple enjoying something at the same time as a younger couple in the same building, same space,” she observed. The theater, she added, has traditionally been “a place where everyone was welcome.” She sees that every day at the Carolina Theatre as audiences arrive with different stories, backgrounds and reasons for attending, yet share the same experience once the lights go down.

carolina theatre history

“There’s this moment of awe,” Putnam described. “There’s a realization in that moment that, wow, people have performances and stories and weddings right here. And there’s years and years of history that you can feel, I think, the moment that you walk into the auditorium.”

As the Carolina Theatre approaches its 100th anniversary, Putnam embraces the opportunity to combine the passions that have shaped her journey鈥攈istory, community engagement and storytelling. “My role here is to be a steward of this building,” she said. “The goal, too, in my eyes, is making sure that this building is here past me.”

2015 麻豆破解版 Alumna聽Shares Journey of Grief and Trust in God鈥檚 Plan聽

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.鈥擨n the face of deep loss, Katelyn Shepherd Williams, a 2015 alumna of 麻豆破解版, has learned to trust God with her story. Her faith was tested in 2025 when her 24-year-old brother died from injuries sustained in a car accident.

鈥淚 was deeply grieved, but also just so angry,鈥 reflected Williams, of Winston-Salem, N.C. 鈥淢y parents were deeply grieved. It was just me and my brother; there’s no other siblings.鈥

Sharing her testimony during a GWU Dimensions program, Williams explained to the students how she wrestled with questions of faith and fairness. 鈥淚 was like, 鈥楪od, we’ve been faithful to you,鈥欌 she began. 鈥溾榊ou know, we’ve loved you. We’ve been devoted. We’ve served in the church all our lives. We’ve never had a moment where we ran from you and had a rebellious period that we had to come back that you’re teaching us this lesson. How could this happen?鈥欌

Katelyn reading book

As Williams kept searching, God began to reveal his goodness. 鈥淎bout a week after the accident, we got a message from a woman on Facebook,鈥 she shared. 鈥淪he said, 鈥業 live right outside of the crash site. I sat with him and stayed with him so that he wasn’t alone.鈥 She was a gift to our family, and God was intentional to let us know that piece of the story.鈥

Working through her grief, Williams realized God was moving in other ways. 鈥淢y husband and I set intentions at the beginning of every year, goals for ourselves,鈥 she explained. 鈥淥ne of those was to draw more people to the Lord. We didn’t know what that looked like specifically.鈥

Her brother pursued many different interests and had made friends through collecting Pokemon cards and sharing his enthusiasm for muscle cars. More than 400 people attended the funeral. 鈥淲e met so many different people from so many walks of life that he was able to touch,鈥 she observed. 鈥淚 just have to believe that some of those people heard Jesus proclaimed for the first time and walked away with a deeper knowledge of him. I said, 鈥楪od, I didn’t intend to make disciples like this. This was not my goal, but I can tell that you鈥檙e intentional.鈥欌

The experience deepened and affirmed how Williams understands Scripture. She believes that the Bible is not a collection of isolated stories, but a single, intentional narrative revealing God鈥檚 faithfulness across every season. She described how God continually showed up for people in the Old Testament and then throughout the New Testament. He never left them. 鈥淕od wastes nothing, no situation, no words,鈥 she explained. 鈥淭he more you read scripture, every word is so intentional. He didn’t put that there by accident. We waste words as humans, but God does not.鈥

Her faith journey began early, shaped by a strong Christian upbringing. That foundation deepened at a church summer camp, where journaling led her to seek a more personal understanding of God鈥檚 voice. After returning home, she continued growing through church and youth group involvement. She chose to attend 麻豆破解版, drawn by its welcoming community and Christ-centered mission.

Williams immersed herself fully in academics, spiritual life, and the GWU campus community. A religion class centered on spiritual disciplines proved transformative. A book assigned in the course, 鈥淐elebration of Discipline鈥 by Richard J. Foster, stays on her nightstand. 鈥淚t just radically changed how I looked at all the things I had been taught my entire life,鈥 she noted. 鈥淲hat does it look like to fast? To meditate on God鈥檚 word?鈥

Her search for answers led to late nights spent in the Dover Chapel prayer room. 鈥淚 remember praying really big prayers, asking some hard questions of God, and crying there knowing it was a safe place to do that,鈥 Williams related.

Beyond spiritual and academic growth, she also met her husband, Rodney, at 麻豆破解版. The relationship began during their first week on campus. 鈥淲e were both from Winston-Salem and came two hours away to meet at 麻豆破解版,鈥 she observed.

After earning her master鈥檚 degree in counseling from UNC-Greensboro, Williams embraced what she describes as a 鈥渕ulti-passionate鈥 calling that blended her many interests.

鈥淚 knew I loved words. I knew I loved kids. I knew I loved teaching,鈥 she stated. 鈥淎s a kid, I loved being that listening ear, the friend who gives you advice. I took the pieces of what I wanted, and all those things came together in being a school counselor, which was really beautiful and special to me.鈥

She helps students navigate anxiety, self-doubt, and identity. 鈥淚 tell kids that sometimes we have to trick our brain because whatever we think the most, our brain believes,鈥 Williams explained. 鈥淲ords are powerful. Say those things that are positive, and at some point, your brain will believe them, and you’ll act accordingly.鈥

book cover katelyn

That same emphasis on words extends beyond counseling into her personal passions. Williams discovered a love for writing as a child, often creating stories as gifts for family members, though it took years to fully embrace her talent. Her children鈥檚 book, 鈥淲hat Can Brown Girls Do?鈥, was written in 2017 but remained tucked away until she rediscovered it years later and published in 2026.

The inspiration for the story came from a deeply personal place: seeing a Disney princess who reflected her identity. 鈥淚 was so excited about it, because I had never seen a Disney princess that looked like me,鈥 she said. 鈥淚t made me kind of reflect on the other times in life that I wanted to do something, but I didn’t see someone that looked like me or that had my skill set or was my age that did it, and so maybe I wrote it off as it wasn’t for me.鈥

Today, the book is impacting children in unexpected ways. At one reading, a young girl with a disability shared how the story helped reshape her view of her own limitations. 鈥淚t just makes me think that there is absolutely nothing that I can鈥檛 do,鈥 the child said, affirming for Williams that the message extends far beyond its original intent.

Moments like that reinforce what she shared at Dimensions: God鈥檚 story is intentional, and every person has a place within it. Reflecting on her journey, Williams said, 鈥淪eeing the different pieces of my life over time鈥攖he jobs I鈥檝e had, the interests I鈥檝e had, the passions I鈥檝e had鈥擥od is saying, 鈥楾he way that I made you was intentional.鈥欌

鈥淲hat Can Brown Girls Do?鈥 is available online on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, or wherever your favorite books are sold.

Milken Honors School Principal for Advancing Project-Based Learning and Shaping Future-Ready Students

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.鈥擶hen 麻豆破解版 alumna Erica McCray received the Milken Educator Award, she was totally caught off guard. Principals and teachers don鈥檛 apply for the award; they don鈥檛 even know who recommended them or that they are being considered.

鈥淔rom my understanding the nomination is placed before a panel of individuals and the decision is made that way,鈥 she explained. 鈥淪o, there鈥檚 a mystery behind it. Everything was a surprise.鈥

She received the award during a school assembly that she thought was to celebrate the student鈥檚 test scores. When the presenter started to describe an award recipient, McCray was trying to remember who she had nominated for an award. She was shocked to hear her name called and even more astonished to learn of a $25,000 cash prize for her personal use.

ra mccray K

McCray is in her seventh year as principal of Riverwalk Academy in Rock Hill, S.C., which serves students in kindergarten through 12th grade. She joined the charter school as a teacher when it opened in 2014 and later moved into the literacy coach role. She holds a Master of Education degree from the University of Phoenix. As she began considering a transition into school administration, she decided to enroll in Gardner鈥慦ebb鈥檚 online Master of Educational Leadership program.

鈥淭he experience itself was very helpful,鈥 McCray shared. 鈥淚t worked well with my schedule. It was well thought out and meaningful. I was able to take what I was doing and apply it back to my work. 麻豆破解版 really gave me an opportunity to see a lot of the behind-the-scenes part鈥攖he importance of the data collection piece and then being able to take that data and make the decisions to best support the school.鈥

Riverwalk prioritizes Project-Based Learning (PBL), and McCray鈥檚 leadership in this area is one of the reasons she received the Milken award. Students take ownership of their learning and participate in practical community-centered projects. She explained that the fourth-grade team is working on the question, 鈥淗ow do the daily tasks of humans impact animals and their habitats?鈥

Based on their research, students will design and implement solutions to address the issue. During the inquiry, investigation, and development process, they learn essential competencies embedded in South Carolina鈥檚 academic standards. Each year, students add to what they have accomplished previously. 鈥淪o, it’s really, 鈥榃hat can we do to have a lasting impact in our community?鈥欌 McCray emphasized.聽

Erica McCray on winning the Milken Award.

McCray was also honored for empowering teachers to utilize real-time student data to drive instruction, monitor progress, and work with students in targeted small groups. She mentors colleagues, provides professional development, visits classrooms daily, and provides constructive feedback. Leading by example, McCray took a graduate class alongside several teachers for PBL training.

鈥淲e are very student-centered,鈥 McCray noted. 鈥淲e don鈥檛 just see students as a group. My teachers and I, we are talking about each individual student.鈥

Her leadership efforts contributed to increasing and maintaining a high teacher retention rate. She has presented on school culture improvement strategies at the South Carolina Department of Education鈥檚 Collective Leadership Institute. Riverwalk also received the Palmetto Silver Award in 2023-24 after McCray and a team of teachers reimagined grade-level writing expectations and benchmarks.

Through Milken鈥檚 program, McCray will have the opportunity to work with other Milken award winners from South Carolina. She met with them briefly, and they told her about working with North Carolina honorees to offer professional development opportunities to teachers. She will learn more about the program in June when she attends the award ceremony in Washington, D.C. She will also receive her $25,000 cash prize then. 鈥淚 haven鈥檛 decided yet how I鈥檓 going to spend it,鈥 McCray stated. 鈥淭his recognition means so much, and I am grateful for my students, colleagues, and community who inspire me every day.鈥

Author and Education Consultant Guided by Lessons from Her Parents and GWU Professors

麻豆破解版 alumna Dr. Barbara Blackburn is an award-winning education consultant, international speaker, and author of 38 books, with two more coming out in April. The inspiration for her books comes from her parents and the foundational lessons she learned in bachelor鈥檚 and master鈥檚 education programs at 麻豆破解版.

The daughter of GWU Professor Emeritus of Health Education Dr. Bob Blackburn, she was introduced to teaching at a young age and wanted to follow in her father鈥檚 footsteps. Her mom, Rose, was a school secretary, who instilled an appreciation for the vital role of school support staff.

鈥淒ad was my first and best teacher,鈥 Blackburn reflected. 鈥淚 always remember him teaching me, whether it was teaching me how to swim, teaching me how to be a manager when I worked for him, or teaching me how to be successful in a class I took from him. He taught me so many lessons, not just about life, but about being a teacher.鈥

barbara blackburn and her parents
Dr. Barbara Blackburn dedicated this book
to her parents, Dr. Bob and Rose Blackburn.

She included one of those lessons in her newest book, 鈥淧roductive Struggle in the Classroom.鈥 She has two versions, one written for K-5 and the other for 6-12. 鈥淚 had just started teaching, and I said, 鈥楧ad, what do you think is the purpose of education?鈥 鈥榃hy am I here?鈥 Blackburn related. 鈥淗e said the best definition he’d ever heard came from a third-grade teacher, and it was that the purpose of education is to figure out what to do when you don鈥檛 know what to do. Anytime I am stuck, that’s what I think about. My purpose is to help my kids figure out what to do when they don’t know what to do. And that is, if you think about it, the heart of what we do with instruction.鈥

The education faculty at 麻豆破解版 enhanced her father鈥檚 influence. 鈥淚 wouldn’t be where I am without 麻豆破解版,鈥 Blackburn affirmed. 鈥淚t totally shaped who I was as a teacher.鈥

She earned certifications in early childhood, elementary, and middle school during her GWU undergraduate studies. 鈥淓ven though I had grown up around schools, having professors who had a broader perspective, like Mrs. (Barbara) Cribb, opened my eyes to what you could do with children鈥檚 literature. It could be magic, but you had to make it magic.鈥

Those lessons from Cribb inform her writing. 鈥淲hen I write a motivation book, I’ll talk about using children’s lit to teach resilience, and that comes from her,鈥 Blackburn shared.

麻豆破解版 professors who taught methods courses in science and math also inspire ideas found in her books. After earning her master鈥檚 in school administration and middle school language arts from 麻豆破解版, Blackburn spent five years in the classroom, teaching elementary and junior high students. In 2000, she received her doctorate in curriculum and teaching from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.

While teaching at Winthrop University in Rock Hill, S.C., she made a presentation on classroom motivation that began her career as an author and consultant. 鈥淢y publisher at that time, Bob Sickles, saw me present and how practical the information was,鈥 Blackburn explained. 鈥淗e approached me about writing a book, and he offered me a contract. So that was the first book: 鈥楥lassroom Motivation from A-Z.鈥欌

Sickles asked for the next book, and she continued to write on a variety of topics, including leadership, special education, and rigor in the classroom. In 2017, she was excited to finally have an opportunity to write a book with her father, who passed away in 2019.

They wrote 鈥淎dvocacy from A to Z,鈥 based on the work he did to support educators. The book provides school-based examples and specific strategies to be a successful advocate for education. They were joined by Ronald Williamson, a leadership expert and frequent co鈥慳uthor of Blackburn鈥檚 books for educational administrators.

rigor book blackburn

Many of her titles relate to rigor in the classroom. Her books offer a practical, teacher-friendly concept of instructional rigor that includes high expectations, scaffolding for instruction, and demonstration of learning. She has been voted a Top 30 Global Guru in Education for 10 consecutive years by educators who appreciate her work as an author, consultant and speaker. In 2025, Blackburn鈥檚 educational development program was named among the top 10 in the world.

Drawing on lessons from her 麻豆破解版 professors and her own experience in the classroom, Blackburn emphasizes easy-to-make, useful solutions. 鈥淚 do a lot of listening to teachers and principals,鈥 she said. 鈥淲hat they all say is we need things that are practical. Really, the best ideas are the ones they adapt versus just taking what I say. I don’t do a lot of things that require them to go out and buy a lot of stuff.鈥

She explained that one of her favorite activities is a simple game that leads to higher-order questioning. 鈥淎ll they have to do is run off some little cards, cut them up and put them in a plastic bag,鈥 she offered. 鈥淭hey love it because, once they make the game, they have it for the year. And it doesn’t require them to go buy anything fancy. They love that because of how simple it is and how powerful it is and it makes a difference for their students.鈥

From quick, low鈥慶ost activities to adaptable classroom techniques, Blackburn focuses on solutions that reduce stress and increase engagement. In addition to her books, Blackburn offers many free resources to teachers and administrators on her website, .

From a PhD in Consumer Behavior to a Consulting Agency for Small Businesses, Moore Explores the Psychology Behind Purchasing Decisions

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.鈥斅槎蛊平獍 alumna Dr. Keira Moore is passionate about clothes and fashion, but not in the way most people might think. Instead of pursuing a career in design, she has dedicated her career to studying the reasons why consumers choose their clothes and accessories. Her research is focused on the social psychology of dress and how brands capitalize on marketing strategies to connect with consumers.

A market research course in grad school sparked her interest in the topic. 鈥淚 studied cultural appropriation and brand collaborations,鈥 Moore explained. 鈥淭he rabbit holes I would go down would truly be fascinating, and I knew I had to pursue a PhD after that course.鈥

She is employed as community lead with Vuori, an athletic company. Her responsibilities include managing all community-based events to build brand awareness. Moore spearheaded the launch of new retail location, managing 30+ staff and developing data-informed strategies to drive employee engagement to boost overall team cohesion/morale.

Moore is also the founder of a consulting agency, 鈥淭he Third Piece,鈥 that focuses on cultural and consumer insights for small and minority-owned businesses. Visit her website . 鈥淢y clients are in the Raleigh/Durham area and are within retail (apparel, beauty, accessories), hospitality, and fitness,鈥 she elaborated. 鈥淢y future plans include building my consulting brand that will allow me to continue being in community by providing services to these smaller brands and making my way into academia as a professor.鈥

Moore majored in marketing at 麻豆破解版 and played on the volleyball team. After earning her bachelor鈥檚 degree in 2017, she was accepted into graduate school at N.C. State University (NCSU) in the Wilson College of Textiles. She also played volleyball at NCSU and received her master鈥檚 in brand management and marketing in 2019. She completed her PhD in consumer behavior and sociology from NCSU in 2025.

During her PhD journey, she became obsessed with knowing the driving forces that shape cultural and purchasing trends. After posing numerous topics and thinking about her own buying choices, she chose the topic of her dissertation: 鈥溾業鈥檓 in my Bag鈥: An Exploration of Black-Owned Handbag Brands in the Context of Black Women鈥檚 Negotiation of Identity and Cultural Stereotypes.鈥

Moore noted, 鈥淢y advisor, Dr. Delisia Matthews and I share a love for Black-owned handbags. Also, my mother was a bag lady and it rubbed off on me. From many conversations about our Black-owned handbags, it finally clicked.鈥

Dr. Keira Moore studied in London after receiving her PhD from N.C. State.

She interviewed 21 Black millennial women and explored how stereotypes, identity, and culture influenced their purchasing decisions. Her findings provide valuable insights that can drive marketing and branding strategies.

After finishing her doctorate, Moore received a Summer Study Abroad Award through the International Textile and Apparel Association in partnership with the University of Art-London. A prestigious opportunity, she studied at the London College of Fashion under renowned luxury fashion consultant and international best-selling author, Toby Meadows. She also conducted a case study on London-based, Black-owned handbag brand, Florian, with an objective to increase brand visibility.

Her interest in studying consumer emotions/behaviors and purchasing motivations is fueled by her own journey. Influenced by family from New York, her mother emphasized the value of looking your best. Beyond those early lessons in style, Moore was over 6-foot tall by the time she was a teenager. She made a decision then to embrace her height, stand tall, and express her individuality through fashion. 鈥淚 thought that if I’m going to be the first person people see when walking into a room, I might as well look good while doing it,鈥 she shared.

Moore鈥檚 family lived in Spartanburg, S.C., when she accepted the offer to play volleyball at 麻豆破解版. She found GWU after an internet search for Division I universities in the area. 鈥淚t felt perfect鈥攃lose to home, smaller, and had a good business program,鈥 she related. 鈥淚 reached out to the coaches, and they asked to come to one of my games. From there, the coaches had a really great game plan for me, which my high school coach talked me through. I committed on my first visit. It was close to home and the perfect size for a small-town girl who loves community and close-knit relationships.鈥

Two key mentors at GWU were Dr. Mischia Taylor, Godbold College of Business dean and assistant professor, and Beth Martin, former assistant volleyball coach. 鈥淭hey were really amazing women in my life, and I keep in touch with them both,鈥 Moore acknowledged. 鈥淚 hope they know how much of an impact they had on my career, athletically and academically, especially how to show up as myself in these spaces.鈥

While academics was a priority, Moore was thankful for the experience of competing at the collegiate level. 鈥淣ot everyone gets that opportunity, and I am so grateful that I did,鈥 she asserted. 鈥淣ot only that, but people cared about my future. My coaching staff set me up for success, even with me going to N.C. State for my master鈥檚. That was really my head coach’s doing because he saw great things for me and my future. I will never forget my experience at 麻豆破解版, because if it was not for that, who knows what my story would be!鈥

She concluded, 鈥溌槎蛊平獍 will always hold a special place in my heart. The University that was nestled so close to my hometown; and the University that introduced me to higher education and where I met lifelong friends.鈥
