Baylor Associate Professor Presents ‘Re-Inventing Church History in The Américas’

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.—Brazilian native Dr. João B. Chaves has built an academic career studying the intersections of religion, culture and public life across the Américas. An associate professor at Baylor University in Waco, Texas, he will bring his expertise to �鶹�ƽ�� on Oct. 27 as the featured speaker for the 2026 Mary Washburn Wilson Lectures.

“The School of Divinity is looking forward to hosting Dr. João Chaves,” said Dr. James R. McConnell Jr., interim dean of the School of Divinity. “Dr. Chaves is a church historian who focuses on religious history in Central and South America. Dr. Chaves will bring two lectures that will explore the influx and influence on Latin America of Christian missionary movements from the United States.”

Presented under the theme “Re-Inventing Church History in The Américas,” the annual lectureship includes these presentations by Chaves:

• 10 a.m. – Missionaries of Domination: Genealogies of Power and the Anti-Democratic Architecture of Christian Supremacy.
• 1 p.m. – Evangelists of Dissent: Jesus, Nietzsche, Xangô, and the Futures of Rights-Based Societies.

Chaves joined Baylor University’s Department of Religion in 2023 after serving at both Princeton Theological Seminary and Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary.

He is an award-winning author and has published extensively on Baptist missions, Pentecostal and charismatic movements, and the role of faith in public life. His book, “Migrational Religion,” received the 2022 Hispanic Theological Initiative Book Prize. His research has been supported by major organizations and institutions, including the Lilly Endowment and Princeton Theological Seminary.

In 2023, Chaves and co-author Mikeal C. Parsons received national recognition when their book, “Remembering Antônia Teixeira: A Story of Missions, Violence, and Institutional Hypocrisy,” was named a finalist for the Foreword INDIES Book of the Year Award in Biography.

Beyond academia, Chaves has contributed opinion articles to publications including The Washington Post and The Christian Century. He has served in leadership roles with organizations such as the Baptist World Alliance and the National Association of Baptist Professors of Religion.

The 2006 Alumna and Founder of Socially Stetson will Lead a New Searight PACE Certificate Program in Freelance Social Media Marketing

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.—With over 20 years of experience in the digital marketing sphere, �鶹�ƽ�� 2006 alumna Stetson Patton specializes in helping small businesses and personal brands elevate their online presence. In September, she’s returning to her alma mater to share her strategies in a new Searight PACE Freelance Social Media Marketing Program.

Patton said this class is for everyone from beginners to those who already know how to post on social media. It’s for the person who wants a career change or someone who has a full-time job but needs extra income. One client could bring $2,500 a month or more.

“This is going to be a 101 class,” she noted. “If you are just like interested in learning about social media, how to make some extra income, we’re going to the basics here. I’m going to teach you the different platforms. Even if you’re already posting, this class is for you

because we’re going to teach you what makes a video go viral, how to script that, how to use AI to find that, how to find clients.”

An unexpected turn of events led Patton to �鶹�ƽ��, where she found opportunities that would influence both her personal and professional life. Just months before her freshman year, she suffered a vocal cord injury and lost a music scholarship to another university. Encouraged by her father, then �鶹�ƽ�� Head Football Coach Steve Patton, she enrolled at GWU with plans to stay for only a year. Instead, she immersed herself in campus life, became a cheerleader, forged lasting connections and discovered a passion for marketing that would launch a decades-long career.

“My freshman year, I met my best friend on campus, Dr. Charles Tichenor, marketing professor,” she shared. “It was a fluke that I got put in a marketing (upper level) class as a freshman, and he was such a good mentor. I fell in love with marketing through that.”

Tichenor offered practical advice and taught the class from his years of experience as the former CEO of Kraft and later as chairman, president and CEO of Champale Inc. Sparkling Beverages.

After graduating in 2006, Patton put her newfound passion to work as marketing coordinator for The Tapestry Group, a nonprofit ministry for women founded by �鶹�ƽ�� alumna Sharon Decker. Facebook was still new, and Patton quickly recognized its potential. Because Decker also worked in economic development in Rutherfordton, N.C., Patton visited churches, car dealerships and restaurants throughout the area, offering to create Facebook pages for local businesses for a fee.

The experience not only sharpened her business instincts but also offered an early glimpse of social media’s growing power to connect organizations with their audiences. Next, she took her skills to work as membership connection director at Dover YMCA in Shelby, N.C. She was also the dance team coach at �鶹�ƽ�� and later took the same position at Lenoir-Rhyne University. During that time, she opened a clothing boutique, which would teach her an important lesson about the growing influence of social media.

“I saw the girls at a basketball game. I was like, ‘What’s this?’ And they’re like, ‘Instagram,’” Patton recalled. “And I was like, ‘What is Instagram?’ So, I think being around the college kids you learn a lot more, faster. Fast fashion really did become a thing because of social media. We lost the business due to social media because we could not keep up with the Joneses. And I remember vowing to learn as much about it as possible because we were already behind.”

Even after graduation, Patton remained connected to the professors who had helped shape her career path. Tichenor and Dr. Tom Meaders, professor of management information systems and operations, were among the first to support her entrepreneurial venture. While Patton never sat in one of Meaders’ classes, his encouragement and willingness to invest in her success reflected the close-knit relationships she found at �鶹�ƽ��.

“I thought it was so cool to have two professors come visit me at the store,” Patton reflected. “Dr. Meaders even found a supplier for our store. To have those friendships with the professors, you just wouldn’t find that anywhere else.”

After the loss of her boutique, she took another marketing job. As she attempted to learn about social media, she realized the drawbacks of watching online tutorials. “I would realize if that video was posted six months ago, it’s outdated now,” Patton said. “So, some of these buttons and features aren’t the same or there’s a different social media platform. Plus, I would ask a question in the comments and never get a response.”

Through her own experience, Patton started making social media tutorials and teaching people about social media while also working full time in a marketing role. Eventually, she realized that she could open her own social media agency—Socially Stetson—and manage social media accounts for other businesses. She will bring all these insights to the PACE Freelance Social Media Marketing Program, and her goal is for every person who takes the class to have one paid retainer client by the end and making $500 or more.

The 12-week certificate program begins on Sept. 19 and will meet on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to noon on Microsoft Teams. The course is designed to help learners build practical skills in content creation, client management, AI tools, business development, and digital marketing. Students will be paired with a non-profit organization to manage its social media, gaining real-world experience and creating a portfolio.

For Patton, the program is about showing people that a new career path may be closer than they think. By combining practical training, real-world experience and mentorship, she hopes participants gain the confidence to take that first step. “I think that’s what I really want people to know is this is a business you can start with zero dollars. It’s just getting started,” she said.

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.—Webbstock 2026 will bring live music, food, artisans and family-friendly fun to �鶹�ƽ�� on Saturday, Aug. 22, from 4 to 9 p.m. at Brinkley Amphitheater. With free admission, residents from Cleveland County and neighboring communities across the region are invited to join students, families and alumni for this evening to celebrate the start of a new academic year.

This outdoor music festival highlights �鶹�ƽ��’s strong ties to Cleveland County and the broader communities it serves. It is also an opportunity for visitors to experience the University’s welcoming campus environment.

The University has announced a diverse lineup of musical acts, including Feeling 22: A Tribute to Taylor Swift, Y2K Kids, and Mississippi singer-songwriter Sam Donald. The three featured acts represent a wide range of musical styles, offering everything from contemporary pop favorites and nostalgic hits to original country-rock sounds that appeal to diverse audiences.

Feeling 22 takes the stage at 4 p.m. and delivers an interactive concert experience featuring music from every era of Taylor Swift’s career. From country favorites to chart-topping pop hits, the tribute act encourages audience participation and offers fans of all ages a chance to celebrate the music of one of today’s most popular artists.

Beginning at 5:30 p.m., Y2K Kids brings audiences back to the early 2000s with a high-energy mix of pop, rock, hip-hop and R&B hits. Known for recreating the sights, sounds and nostalgia of the decade, the six-piece band has become a favorite for crowds looking to relive the era of flip phones, MP3 players and unforgettable playlists.

The last performer of the evening, Sam Donald will play from 7:30 to 9 p.m. Originally from Jackson, Miss., he rose to national attention after several songs and videos went viral on TikTok in 2024, generating more than 15 million views in less than six weeks. His distinctive sound, often described as “grunge country,” blends alternative rock influences with country storytelling and has helped build a rapidly growing fan base.

In addition to live entertainment, attendees can enjoy a variety of food and beverage vendors, local artisans and specialty merchants. Offerings include lemonade, desserts, soul food, Italian ice, handcrafted soaps, candles, permanent jewelry and unique 3D-printed creations.

More than a children’s attraction, the Fun Zone will feature inflatables, lawn games and interactive activities designed for all ages. From younger visitors to college students and families, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.

The first 100 �鶹�ƽ�� students to attend will receive an exclusive Webbstock T-shirt and swag. All attendees can also pick up free Webbstock giveaways, including stickers, temporary tattoos, and hand fans, while supplies last.

Viral ‘Grunge Country’ Artist Completes Entertainment Lineup for Aug. 22 Community Celebration

Mississippi-based singer-songwriter Sam Donald will join the entertainment lineup for the community celebration on Saturday, Aug. 22, at Brinkley Amphitheater. The free event will welcome students, families, alumni and community members for an evening of live music, food, children’s activities and fellowship as �鶹�ƽ�� launches a new academic year.

Assistant Dean of Students & Director of Student Engagement Brian Arnold said Webbstock is designed to create opportunities for students to engage, build relationships, and feel a sense of belonging. “The start of a new semester is about more than classes—it’s about finding your place on campus and connecting to the surrounding community. Webbstock is designed to bring our campus and community together through music, fun, and shared experiences. Originally from Jackson, Miss., and now residing on the Mississippi Gulf Coast, Donald spent years performing as a guitarist in various bands before stepping into the spotlight as a lead performer and songwriter in 2021. His growing popularity has earned attention across the country, particularly after several of his songs and videos went viral on TikTok in early 2024, generating more than 15 million views in less than six weeks. The viral success led to a dramatic increase in streaming activity, with his music seeing more than a 400 percent increase in listeners.

Working alongside longtime producer Zack Keel, Donald embraced a new creative direction in 2023. Rather than pursuing conventional genre expectations, the pair focused on creating music that flowed naturally from their songwriting process. The result has been a distinctive sound often described as “grunge country,” blending the raw energy of alternative rock with the storytelling traditions of country music.

Community members, families and alumni are invited to join in the celebration for an evening of live music, food trucks, vendors, a kids’ zone, and fellowship at Brinkley Amphitheater from 4-9 p.m. Admission is free.

Lt. Col. Michael A. Cooper, ROTC Leader is the Featured Speaker for the Service at 9 a.m.

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.—Each year, �鶹�ƽ�� joins communities across the nation in pausing for a Memorial Day observance to honor the lives of those who have died in military service to their country. First recognized nationally in 1868, Memorial Day serves as a solemn reminder of those who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to freedom and the safety of others.

�鶹�ƽ��’s observance for the campus and surrounding community will be held at 9 a.m. on May 22 in front of Hamrick Hall. The featured speaker is Lt. Col. Michael A. Cooper, professor of military science, Wofford College Army ROTC.

The program will include a series of reflections, readings, and musical elements led by �鶹�ƽ�� faculty and staff. President Nate Evans will open the ceremony with a welcome and invocation, followed by the national anthem performed by Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Music Dr. Aaron Rice. Adjunct Instructor and retired U.S. Air Force Colonel Dr. Jim Rennie will lead a responsive reading of Psalm 93.

Evans will introduce Cooper, whose career reflects a deep commitment to leadership, service, and education. Cooper joined Wofford’s staff as professor of military science in August 2025, where he educates and instructs Army ROTC cadets enrolled in the military science and leadership curriculum at Wofford, the University of South Carolina Upstate, �鶹�ƽ��, and Converse University.

In addition to preparing senior ROTC cadets to commission as officers of character for the Total Army, Cooper partners with local high schools to support Junior ROTC programs that develop citizens committed to lifelong service.

A veteran of more than 20 years of military service, Cooper has completed multiple overseas tours and received numerous awards and decorations, including the Bronze Star and the Meritorious Service Medal with three oak leaf clusters.

Following Cooper’s remarks, the observance will move into a solemn moment, the Remembrance of the Fallen. Vice President for Student Development and Dean of Students Lesley Villarose will lead the tribute. As silence is observed, she will ring the bell 21 times, which is the highest military honor for those who died defending freedom and democracy. Associate Vice President of Marketing Wilson Brooks will then play “Taps.”

The program will conclude with closing remarks from Evans, followed by a benediction given by Jaquan Lynch, associate minister for Athletic Ministries.

More Than 1,300 Donors Support �鶹�ƽ�� Students, �鶹�ƽ�� and Athletics

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.—A shared sense of purpose and Bulldog energy fueled Double Dawg Day 2026 at Gardner‑Webb University, as alumni, parents, employees, students and friends rallied behind the institution’s mission. More than 1,300 contributed over $2.5 million to support scholarships, academics, athletics and campus initiatives.

The strong response on April 16 reflects the power of collective impact and the continued momentum of Double Dawg Day as it entered its 11th year. Donors came together from all over the United States and across the globe—extending from Austria to Venezuela. Gifts of all sizes made an immediate difference, including a transformative contribution that will fully renovate the athletic weight room, strengthening the University’s mission and expanding opportunities for its students now and for years to come.

“This year’s Double Dawg Day is a powerful reminder of what can happen when the �鶹�ƽ�� community comes together with a shared sense of purpose,” emphasized GWU President Nate Evans. “As our once-a-year giving campaign, it continues to create a transformational impact across our campus, shaping the student experience in meaningful ways. Each gift represents a belief in our mission and an investment in our students, and we are deeply grateful to everyone who made this day possible.”

Participation remained a central focus of Double Dawg Day 2026. Friends of the University accounted for 43% of donors, followed by parents at 22%, alumni at 19%, and additional support from faculty, staff, and students.

“Double Dawg Day continues to demonstrate the extraordinary generosity of the Bulldog community,” noted Interim Vice President for Advancement Karen Bruce. “Each gift—no matter the size—is a powerful statement of belief in our kingdom mission and a meaningful investment in the future of �鶹�ƽ�� and the students we serve. We are deeply grateful for the collective impact that is shaping lives today and for generations to come.”

Throughout the day, donors directed their gifts to a wide range of priorities, including the University Priority Fund, academic schools and colleges, scholarships, Athletics, the Bulldog Club, and campus programs and departments. A portion of the donations will be used to renovate a residence hall, make updates to the Football Center and Lutz-Yelton Convocation Center, and enhance the criminal justice program through the creation of a dedicated forensic lab space.

The success of Double Dawg Day 2026 was made possible by a campus‑wide effort, with students, faculty, staff, coaches, deans, alumni volunteers and ambassadors promoting the day and encouraging participation across digital platforms.

Kanisha Fowler, director of Annual Giving and Advancement Communications at Gardner‑Webb, emphasized the collective nature of the achievement and thanked the Bulldog community for rallying behind the University.

“The love and support for �鶹�ƽ�� are on full display during Double Dawg Day,” Fowler praised. “This is the power of our community, coming together to achieve something meaningful. Grammy winning Artists Headline a Patriotic Program Celebrating American Composers, Veterans, and GWU’s New President Nate Evans

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.—Influenced early by American fiddle traditions and later shaped by classical and jazz training, Mark O’Connor’s music reflects the full scope of America’s musical heritage. On April 27 at 7 p.m. in Dover Theatre, his unique musical talent comes to Gardner‑Webb University as the GWU Orchestra presents “America at 250! A Celebration!” The concert features O’Connor and his wife, violinist Maggie O’Connor, whose performances blend classical training with American roots traditions.

“We will honor 250 years of America by performing music by American composers with an American soloist, Mark O’Connor,” said Dr. Patricia Sparti, conductor of the Gardner Webb University Orchestra. “He is the greatest jazz violinist, bluegrass fiddler and American musician of this generation. We will also honor veterans during the program.”

Tickets for “America at 250! A Celebration!” are $15 and free for all students and Gardner‑Webb faculty and staff.

Few living musicians embody the breadth, innovation and spirit of American music quite like Mark O’Connor. Grammy‑winning folk icon James Taylor once said of him, “There’s something about that guy’s touch. I think he is to music what Muhammad Ali is to boxing.” Yo‑Yo Ma echoed that sentiment, praising both O’Connor’s mastery and restless creativity: “Between thought and execution there are no impediments, zero. But what really interests me is that this is a person in constant development, hungry to develop.”

That hunger has shaped one of the most singular careers in American music history. A four‑time Grand Masters Champion, O’Connor was only 13 years old when he became the youngest person ever to win the Grand Master Fiddler Championships, an all‑ages competition. His record still stands atop more than four decades later. Additionally, he remains the only musician to have won national championships on fiddle, bluegrass guitar, and mandolin.

Also a three-time Grammy winner and eight-time CMA Artist of the Year, O’Connor is one of the most in‑demand session musicians in the country. He has recorded on more than 500 albums and collaborated with artists ranging from Dolly Parton and Paul Simon to Randy Travis and The Judds.

Yet O’Connor’s influence reaches far beyond the recording studio. Drawing equally from folk traditions, jazz and classical training, he has forged what many critics call a new American classical music. His works—including the bestselling “Appalachia Waltz,” co‑recorded with Yo‑Yo Ma and Edgar Meyer, and “The American Seasons”—are now staples of orchestral repertoires worldwide. His “Fiddle Concerto” remains the most‑performed modern violin concerto of the last 50 years.

Maggie will share the stage with her husband. A violinist and vocalist, she is also a Grammy Award‑winning artist whose career bridges classical virtuosity and American roots music with rare ease. Trained at the Peabody Conservatory of Johns Hopkins University and the Aspen Music Festival and School, Maggie brings both technical command and expressive depth to every performance. Critics have praised her as “formidable” and “soulful,” noting her uncanny musical connection with her husband on stage.

Maggie has performed at the Grand Ole Opry, appeared at Carnegie Hall’s Zankel Hall, and collaborated with artists including Paul Simon, Béla Fleck, Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra. In addition to performing, she is an educator and co‑director of the O’Connor Method String Camps, helping shape the next generation of American string players. A visual artist as well, Maggie draws inspiration from the intersection of music, nature and imagination—an influence that resonates through her artistry.

The April 27 program reflects the sweeping story of American music, past and present. Highlights include the finale of Dvořák’s “New World Symphony,” Gershwin selections from “Porgy and Bess” (arranged by Robert Russell Bennett), Copland’s iconic “Hoedown from Rodeo,” and Elgar’s “Pomp and Circumstance No. 4,” performed in honor of Gardner‑Webb University’s new president, Nate Evans.

The program also features “Faith” from O’Connor’s groundbreaking “Improvised Violin Concerto,” with Mark O’Connor as soloist, as well as “Strings and Threads,” a piece he composed. Both Mark and Maggie will perform violin, guitar, and vocals on Mark’s arrangement of Stevie Wonder’s “Love’s in Need of Love Today.”

Together, the evening serves as both a tribute and a celebration—honoring America’s musical heritage while showcasing artists who continue to expand its possibilities.

Following the concert, Mark and Maggie O’Connor will sell CDs, DVDs, shirts and jewelry and will sign autographs and take photos with audience members.

Campus Events Focus on Education, Advocacy, and Solidarity with Survivors

�鶹�ƽ��’s Office of Student Development will recognize Sexual Assault Awareness Month throughout April with a series of educational programs and awareness events. For 25 years, Sexual Assault Awareness Month has united survivors, advocates, and communities in a shared commitment to ending sexual assault, abuse, and harassment through education, prevention, and support.

Vice President of Student Development and Dean of Students Lesley Villarose, who also serves as the University’s interim Title IX coordinator, emphasized the importance of intentionally observing the month and engaging the campus community in meaningful ways.

“Honoring Sexual Assault Awareness Month means choosing to see, to listen, and to act—because every voice matters, every story deserves dignity, and every community has a responsibility to create a culture of respect, consent, and accountability,” Villarose emphasized.

Building on this commitment, �鶹�ƽ�� will host a variety of programs and initiatives this mont aimed at fostering awareness, education, and open dialogue around sexual violence, prevention efforts, and available campus resources.

Monthlong Book Display at Dover Library

�鶹�ƽ��’s Dover Library will host a book display featuring books and educational resources focused on sexual violence awareness, prevention, consent, and survivor support. This collection is intended to encourage learning, reflection, and informed dialogue across the campus community. Students, faculty, and staff are invited to visit the display throughout the month to explore these important topics and access available resources.

Denim Day originated in response to a widely criticized Italian court decision in the 1990s that raised serious concerns about the treatment and rights of victims. Women in the Italian Parliament wore jeans in solidarity the following day, helping to spark a movement that is now recognized globally and supported by organizations such as Peace Over Violence.
